One day, a bored teenage boy saw a girl. He immediately fell in love with her. Then, all of sudden, the whole world looked different to him. No more of the same old dull feelings, the same old gloomy places. However cloudy it was, the boy found an ultimate sun inside him which generated amazing heat, passion, light and color of love. This, I believe, is an artist. The artist is someone who falls in love everyday in the act of seeing. Every seeing renews itself and brings new wonder. In this humble innocence and honesty of seeing things, the artist finds the power of simplicity, beauty, love and "Chi".

What is Chi? It is believed in the East that the whole universe, all of "Nature" is filled with Chi. When Chi gathers, it creates an entity and when it scatters, it is absorbed back into the universe in the form of energy. Chi is the main source of all lives and things and the main energy of endless creativity and creations. Making paintings full of this dynamic Chi has been my main concern.

In the process of making my paintings, I found a square to be the most inclusive, fundamental, minimum-structural, universal form of geometry. The square and I developed a great affinity. At first, a square was a square: a fixed, immutable, absolute square. Then, as I played with it, I became a square, a square with Chi and freedom. When I placed squares in a linear stream with different angles and perspectives (in the "Unfoldings" series and "My Little Man" series), the squares transformed into dynamic movement creating almost organic life beings. In the "Samadhi" series, when the squares were laid horizontally and vertically with different angles and perspectives, the outcome was very surprising and interesting: the straight line of the square became a curved line, two dimensional flat surface became three dimensional space and squares eventually could be a circle.

All of this is possible when we look at things with different angles and perspectives. A square peg can be a round peg. No more conflicts, confrontations, and contradictions but a symphony of harmony and dynamics. Squares with Chi are alive and can even dance. I, Chi, dance with my squares and my paintings. Chi makes possible the endless metamorphosis of squares. It has been so much fun dancing with my paintings. When you see my paintings, you may feel how my paintings lead you to the dance floor. Well, would you like to dance with my paintings? Would you like to fall in love?
