The intense and sophisticated color palette of Lee Su Kyung’s works acts as a highly appealing element for viewers encountering her art for the first time. From the perspective of art majors, she boldly uses color combinations that are somewhat unfamiliar, combinations that are rarely, if ever, considered or attempted. This choice of colors gives her work a unique and unfamiliar experience. On top of a smooth, monochromatic background layered more than five times, there are bundles of bands or lines that create complementary contrasts of colors, producing striking effects of color contrast. The intertwined color bands generate a sense of infinite space and depth on the canvas. The bold brushstrokes, applied in one swift motion with each touch, show that the artist’s actions are an essential part of the process in completing the artwork. Every gesture of the artist continuously moves between the canvas and her body, creating one layer after another.
