서유라는 유년시절 <유라의 하루>라는 일기책을 발간하면서 책에 대한 남다른 기억과 의미부여를 해왔다. 일기책은 꿈과 자신감을 심어주는 도구였고, 수수께끼처럼 비밀을 풀어나가는 즐거운 공간으로 특별했다는 것이다. 초기 작업은 전문서적, 고전소설, 잡지 등을 자유롭게 펼치고, 구기고, 포개며 쌓여있거나 상하좌우로 확대되고 있는 모습을 주로 그렸다. 이는 어린시절 블록쌓기 놀이처럼 즐겁고 유쾌한 것으로, 기능성이 배제된 채 수많은 이미지와 텍스트가 잠재된 책이라는 오브제를 강조했다. 이후 작가가 도서관 사서가 된듯 내용에 따라 무궁무진한 카테고리를 만들 수 있는 책의 잠재성을 ‘Vintage Books’ 시리즈 처럼 표지와 책 제목을 드러낸다. 또한 책을 유닛(unit)으로 꽃이나 하트, 별 등 통일감있는 형태를 만들어내는데, 이때 책은 각각의 정보를 내포하는 도구이자 개별화된 각각의 주체로 표현된다. 현실에서는 쌓기 힘든 구성으로 재구성된 화면은 층층이 시간성을 나타내고 작가는 이를 삶의 지층 또는 인류의 역사로 비유한다.

Seo Yoo Ra, since publishing a diary book titled Yura's Day during her childhood, has attached special meaning and memories to books. The diary book served as a tool that instilled dreams and confidence, and it was a unique space that allowed for the joy of unraveling secrets like a riddle. Her early works primarily depicted books, such as professional texts, classic novels, and magazines, freely unfolded, crumpled, stacked, or expanded in all directions. This was a joyful and playful experience, akin to childhood block-building games, emphasizing the object of the book as something that contains numerous images and texts, without any functional purpose. Later, as if becoming a librarian, the artist began to highlight the potential of books to create countless categories according to their contents, revealing covers and titles in works like the Vintage Books series. She also used books as units to form cohesive shapes like flowers, hearts, and stars, with each book representing a tool that contains specific information and also an individualized subject. The reconstructed images, with compositions that are hard to achieve in reality, represent layered temporality, which the artist likens to the strata of life or the history of humanity.
