최울가 작가는 1956년 울산에서 태어나 부산에서 성장했다. 학교생활에 잘 적응하지 못해 학업 성취도는 낮았지만, 문학과 음악에 심취해 밤을 새우곤 했던 그는 집안에서 ‘문제아’로 불렸다. 1980년대에 파리로 건너가 예술 세계에 눈을 뜨면서 본격적으로 화가의 길을 걷기 시작했으며, 15년 동안 파리에 머물며 작품 활동을 이어갔다. 이후 2000년대 초반, 40대 중반에 현대미술의 중심지인 뉴욕으로 활동 무대를 옮기고, <블랙 앤 화이트 시리즈>를 선보이며 국제 미술계의 주목을 받았다.

Choi Wool Ga was born in 1956 in Ulsan, South Korea, and grew up in Busan. Struggling to adapt to school life, his academic performance remained average at best. However, he immersed himself in literature and music, often staying up all night—earning a reputation as the family’s “problem child.” In the 1980s, he moved to Paris, where he discovered his passion for art and began his career as a painter. After spending 15 years in Paris developing his craft, he relocated to New York in the early 2000s, where his renowned <Black and White Series> brought him significant attention in the contemporary art scene. 

Choi’s paintings are characterized by the spontaneous appearance of symbols and letters, along with a focus on monochromatic tones and line drawings. His work reflects a literary sensitivity rooted in his childhood experiences and explores the origins of the soul, shaped by both conscious and unconscious realms. By expressing the ancient mysteries of the universe and the innocence of pure, free spirits on canvas, Choi has garnered international acclaim and recognition from art enthusiasts in cities like New York and Paris.
