노정란은 이화여자대학교 미술대학 서양화과와 동 대학원에서 「오브제의 실재성」 논문과 개인전을 통해 1973년 미술 석사 학위를 취득했다. 이후 1975년 미국으로 건너가 19년간 머무르며 예술 활동을 이어갔다. 1983년에는 롱비치 캘리포니아 주립대학교에서 두 번째 미술 석사 학위를 취득했다.

1993년 한국으로 돌아온 이후, 그는 주로 한국에서 작품 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 주요 연작으로는 <마음의 풍경>, <신비에로의 열망>, <황황금분할>, <색놀이> 등이 있으며, 2003년부터 꾸준히 이어온 <색놀이-쓸기> 연작도 그의 대표적인 작업이다. 노정란은 이 작품들을 통해 동서양의 관념 체계를 초월하는 절대적인 이상미(理想美)를 추구해왔다.

특히 <색놀이-쓸기> 연작은 넓은 빗자루로 캔버스를 쓸어내리며 색을 겹겹이 쌓아가는 작업이다. 이 단순한 반복 행위 속에는 오랜 시간 축적된 경험과 숙련된 기술이 깃들어 있다. 표면적으로는 단순해 보이지만, 색채의 질감과 깊이가 점진적으로 쌓이며 물질의 감각을 넘어선다. 이 과정은 영원, 우주, 정신이라는 내면적 요소에 접근하는 동시에, 생명의 깊은 곳에 자리한 정(情)을 끌어내고 융합하는 기운생동(氣韻生動)의 예술적 실천이라 할 수 있다.

Noh Jung Ran earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from Ewha Womans University, majoring in Western painting, with her thesis “The Reality of Objects” and a solo exhibition in 1973. In 1975, she moved to the United States, where she lived for 19 years, continuing her artistic journey. In 1983, she earned a second Master of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Long Beach.

After returning to Korea in 1993, Noh focused on developing her artistic career primarily in her home country. Her major series include <Landscape of the Mind>, <Desire Toward Mystery>, <Golden Ratio>, and <Color Play>. Since 2003, she has continued her renowned series. Through these works, she pursues an ideal beauty that transcends the conceptual frameworks of both Eastern and Western philosophies. 

In particular, the series involves repeatedly sweeping the canvas with a wide broom, layering colors over time. This seemingly simple repetitive action reflects her years of experience and mastery. While the result may appear minimal on the surface, the gradual accumulation of textures and hues creates depth that transcends the material itself. This process not only approaches the aesthetic essence of eternity, the universe, and the spirit but also embodies Giwoon Saengdong—an artistic practice that evokes and harmonizes the profound emotions rooted in the depths of life.
