김건주 조각의 기본 어법은 '이화(異化: alienation)'다. '소격' 혹은 '낯설게 하기'라는 말과 동의어다. 이 기법은 사물들이 일상적 맥락으로부터 벗어남을 근간으로 한다. 세계에 기반을 둔 사물과 사물간의 관계, 세계와 사물간의 관계, 그 질서정연한 체계에 대한 반란과 그로이한 전복이 김건주가 꿈꾸는 세계다. 그 과정에서 '낯섬'이 발생한다. 이화 기법을 통한 그의 전략은 사물의 전복을 통한 사물의 '다시 보기'다. 사물은 기존의 일상적 지평에선 언제나 그렇듯 상투적일 수밖에 없다. 김건주는 일상적 사물에게서 상투성을 벗겨내고 새로운 옷을 입힌다. 그가 즐겨 사용하는 더페이즈망 기법은 이미지의 환치를 통해 사물의 새로운 모습을 제시하기 위해 동원되는 장치다. 

김건주는 말한다. "세상에 존재하는 모든 것들, 인간, 자연, 사물, 사건, 정황. 그들은 어떤 순간에 어떤 조합으로 만나 고유한 관계를 형성한다."

The fundamental technique in Kim Geon-joo's sculptures is 'alienation' (異化: alienation). It is synonymous with the terms 'defamiliarization' or 'making strange.' This technique is based on the idea that objects deviate from their everyday context. The world is shaped by the relationships between objects, between objects and the world, and the orderly systems that govern them; Kim Geon-joo envisions a rebellion and subversion of this order. In this process, 'strangeness' arises. His strategy through the alienation technique is to offer a 're-visioning' of objects by subverting them. In their everyday context, objects inevitably tend to be conventional. Kim Geon-joo strips objects of their clichés and dresses them in new attire. His frequently used technique, the The Phase-Mask method, is a device employed to present a new form of an object by swapping its images.

Kim Geon-joo says, "All things in the world—humans, nature, objects, events, and circumstances—meet at certain moments in specific combinations to form unique relationships."
